Agartala, November 18: In a significant demonstration, members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association Sadar Sub-Committee staged a protest in front of the Agartala Municipal Corporation office on Saturday, demanding urgent resolutions to issues arising from NREGA, TUEP, and social allowances. The protest highlighted the growing challenges faced by the public due to the prevailing conditions.
Addressing the gathering, the editor of the headquarters committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association leaders expressed concern over the escalating disorder attributed to the governance of the double engine government. Characterizing the state’s current condition as inhumane, the speaker emphasized the mismatch between NREGA and TUEP employment and inadequate compensation. Furthermore, irregularities in the distribution of social benefits were underscored, with a notable reduction of 50,000 social allowances following the installation of the current government.
A particularly distressing aspect highlighted during the protest was the alleged restriction on women’s enrollment in Self-Help Groups (SHGs) unless they were affiliated with the ruling party. This discriminatory practice was said to be depriving numerous women on a daily basis.
In an effort to address these pressing concerns, irrespective of political affiliations, the committee decided to submit a deputation to the Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation. The deputation outlines a comprehensive set of demands, including the provision of NREGA and TUEP employment opportunities, an increase in wages to Rs 340, and the prompt disbursement of regular social allowances. The committee emphasized the urgency of resolving these issues to alleviate the hardships faced by the affected individuals in the community.
