Allegation surfaces against homeopathy doctor for conducting illegal abortion at Sonamura

Agartala, August 19: A homeopathy doctor, identified as Dhiman Debnath, is facing accusations of terminating a pregnancy without proper consent, raising serious concerns about medical practices within the region. The incident unfolded in the Sonamura sub-division when the wife of Iman Hossain, a resident of the Mainama area under the jurisdiction of the Sonamura police station, sought medical treatment from Dr. Dhiman Debnath on a Sunday morning.

Husband Iman Hossain has alleged that Dr. Dhiman Debnath, a homeopathy practitioner, terminated his wife’s three-month-old pregnancy without obtaining the requisite parental consent. This distressing revelation has generated tension and unease in the community. Responding to the incident, Iman Hossain has expressed his intent to file a formal complaint at the Sonamura sub-district police station.

In his defense, Dr. Dhiman Debnath asserted that he did not deliberately terminate the pregnancy but rather cleaned it due to pre-existing complications. He clarified that the fetus was already compromised within the womb.

This troubling incident has shed light on a broader issue, with reports suggesting that not only in Sonamura sub-division but also in various parts of the state, several unscrupulous doctors, including some practicing homeopathy, engage in unauthorized pregnancy terminations for monetary gains through private practices. Concerns have been raised within informed circles about the lack of oversight by the health department, district administration, or sub-divisional administration, allowing such practices to continue unchecked.

The allegations underscore the need for heightened vigilance and regulation within the medical community to ensure the safety and well-being of expectant mothers and their unborn children.
