Allegations of rampant illegal land filling at Bishalgarh

Date:

Agartala, 20th  May 2026:  The Bishalgarh subdivision administration has come under sharp criticism for alleged negligence as illegal land filling continues unchecked across municipal and rural areas. Reports suggest that drains and agricultural lands are being filled either by bypassing the administration or by manipulating officials.

Local sources allege that a section of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) office is linked to the illegal network, which operates openly in shops opposite the SDM office. Despite widespread complaints, the administration has remained silent, with glaring evidence visible at Bishalgarh Motor Stand where influential residents have been filling land illegally for the past four months.

It is learnt that a government wall, damaged during the devastating floods two years ago, was never repaired. Taking advantage of this, several individuals filled drains and farmland, mostly through unlawful means. Among those named are municipal councillor Paltu Debnath, along with residents including the late Rakhal Biswas, Bijoy Biswas, Maya Rani Debnath, the late Srinivas Bhattacharya, Bhupesh Bhattacharya, Hare Krishna Bhattacharya, Ramchandra Bhattacharya, and the late Arjun Das Vaishnav.

For months, both the subdivision administration and municipal council remained inactive. Only after media reports highlighted the issue did the administration stir into action. Recently, an inspection team led by the SDM visited the site. Allegations have also surfaced that bulldozers were used to demolish the wall, yet officials claimed ignorance of the matter.

Earlier, residents of Durganagar complained of administrative apathy when a massive tree fell during a storm. This time, however, the SDM has ordered an inquiry into the illegal land filling activities.
