AMC demolishes private properties to reclaim government land from illegal encroachments

Agartala, July 28, 2023: The Agartala Municipal Corporation initiated a demolition drive along both sides of the road from Durga Chowmuhani to Barjala Bazar in the capital city on Friday. The drive aimed to remove illegal constructions that had encroached upon the government-owned land alongside the road. Officials from the Municipal Corporation were present during the operation.

The campaign to clear the area of illegal constructions had issued prior notices to owners, urging them to voluntarily dismantle the unauthorized structures. However, despite the notices, some individuals did not comply and continued with the illegal constructions on government-owned land. As a result, the demolition drive was carried out to reclaim the government property.

This initiative taken by the Agartala Municipal Corporation to free up the city’s roadsides from illegal encroachments is commendable. It demonstrates the authorities’ determination to ensure a congestion-free Agartala. However, during the operation, one lawyer’s wall was demolished without any prior notice, leading to a legal dispute over the property. Advocate Deepjyoti Pal stated that he will approach the court regarding this matter.

Despite efforts to conduct the demolition drive, there are instances where the Municipal Corporation appears to be lax in preventing repeated encroachments on government land. It is noticeable that, year after year, illegal constructions resurface even after businesses were conducted in government-owned areas. Nevertheless, the campaign received appreciation from the city’s residents. Whether the Agartala Municipal Corporation will continue the demolition drive against all illegal constructions in the coming days remains to be seen.
