Agartala, 31st May 2024: Agartala Municipal Corporation has announced the construction of a new civil hospital, Agartala City Hospital, aimed at enhancing the quality of healthcare services in the state.
The initiative, spearheaded by Commissioner Shailesh Kumar Yadav, seeks to address the overwhelming patient load in the city’s main referral hospitals—AGMC, GB Hospital, and IGM Hospital. He said that the decision to build the new hospital comes in response to the increasing number of outpatient department (OPD) visits in these major hospitals. Currently, GB Hospital handles over 2,000 OPD cases daily, while IGM Hospital manages approximately 1,200.
“This heavy influx of patients has prompted the health department to consider a separate facility dedicated to primary and secondary healthcare needs”, he said.
During a recent site visit to the old AMC office premises in Kasari Patti, Shailesh Kumar Yadav highlighted the state government’s intention to reserve GB Hospital and IGM Hospital for super specialty treatments.
By redirecting primary and secondary healthcare services to the new Agartala City Hospital, the government aims to reduce the strain on these hospitals and improve overall healthcare efficiency.
“The maintenance and operational responsibilities of Agartala City Hospital will fall under the jurisdiction of the Agartala Municipal Corporation. This strategic move is expected to streamline healthcare delivery in the state, ensuring that residents receive timely and effective medical care”, he said.
