Agartala, 24th October 2025: Controversy erupted in Tripura today after documents allegedly proving that MLA and former insurgent leader Ranjit Debbarma is a Bangladeshi citizen went viral on social media. The viral posts, which include purported birth and citizenship certificates, have prompted political backlash and demands for a government investigation.
The regional outfit Amra Bangali staged a protest outside its state office in Agartala, calling for immediate verification of the claims. Party state secretary Gouranga Raudra Pal led the demonstration, urging authorities to clarify Debbarma’s citizenship status.
“If these documents are genuine, then Ranjit Debbarma is guilty of a serious offense. It is deeply concerning that someone allegedly of Bangladeshi origin is speaking out against infiltration while possibly being an infiltrator himself,” Pal said.
Pal emphasized that the government must act swiftly to investigate the matter and inform the public. “If he is indeed a Bangladeshi national, his membership in the legislative assembly must be revoked immediately,” he added, suggesting that legal action should follow.
