Agartala, October 25: A rare discovery was made on Wednesday, when an ancient idol of Goddess Kali was found in the Gomti river at Dasmighat near Udaipur.
The idol, made of stone, was spotted by some locals who had gone to the river for the Dashami rituals. They informed the police and the municipal council, who arrived at the scene and took the idol into their custody.
The police said that the idol will be handed over as per the administrative decision. They also said that they are not sure how and where the idol came from, as the river water is low and people often walk through that area.
The locals, however, believe that the idol is very old and may have fallen into the river during the excavation of Jagannath Dighi, a historic pond nearby.
The idol has attracted a lot of attention from the people, who consider it a sign of good fortune and divine blessing. Some of them have also demanded that the idol should be installed in a temple and worshipped properly. The idol is said to be about three feet tall and has four arms, holding various weapons and a severed head.
