Anti-mosquito drive launched in Agartala using Guppy fish; Eco-friendly campaign against dengue & malaria

Date:

Agartala, 27th May 2026:  A unique ecological initiative aimed at preventing mosquito-borne diseases was organised at Jagannath Bari Road in Agartala, where thousands of larvivorous Guppy fish were released into drains and stagnant water bodies as part of an “Anti-Mosquito Fish Release and Awareness Drive.”

The programme was spearheaded by Sourav Gour, son of late social worker Sankar Gour, whose legacy of social service and community welfare was remembered throughout the event. Organisers said the initiative was designed to create a natural and sustainable defence mechanism against diseases such as Dengue and Malaria by destroying mosquito larvae at the breeding stage.

The campaign was attended by Agartala Press Club President and veteran journalist Pranab Sarkar as the chief guest. During his address, Sarkar praised the initiative as a forward-looking public health movement and compared it with traditional blood donation camps, stating that while blood donation saves lives after crises occur, the Guppy fish deployment works as a preventive mechanism to stop outbreaks before they begin.

He also stressed the importance of public participation in maintaining cleanliness and preventing water stagnation, saying citizens should not depend solely on the Agartala Municipal Corporation for disease control measures.

According to the organisers, a single Guppy fish can consume more than 100 mosquito larvae daily and can survive even in low-oxygen drainage environments, making them an effective and eco-friendly biological solution.

Residents present at the programme appreciated the initiative and said such grassroots campaigns would inspire youth participation in public health and environmental protection.
