Agartala, 2nd January 2026: An armed attack on a night guard during a suspected robbery attempt late yesterday night has triggered widespread fear among residents of the Churaibari police station area.
The injured guard, identified as Kritish Rajbanshi (38), is currently undergoing treatment at North District Hospital after narrowly escaping with his life.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. at the residence of Rupak Deb Ray (45), a resident of Ward No. 3 under Churaibari Gram Panchayat. The house was unoccupied at the time, as the owner had left with his family for his ancestral home in Khowai district on December 30 due to family reasons. Kritish Rajbanshi had been appointed to guard the house during their absence.
Local sources said that despite the house being equipped with CCTV cameras, a group of 4–5 miscreants, their faces and bodies covered in black cloth, managed to enter the premises by cutting through the tin boundary fence. The attackers initially assaulted the guard brutally with the apparent intent to kill him. Though three assailants struck first, two more later joined the attack. Rajbanshi sustained serious head injuries from sharp weapons.
Bleeding profusely, the injured guard somehow broke through the fence and escaped to a neighboring house, raising an alarm. Hearing his cries, local residents rushed to the spot, prompting the attackers to flee.
Residents informed the Fire Service, whose personnel arrived promptly and, with the help of locals, rescued the injured guard. He was first taken to Kadamtala Social Hospital, and later referred to Dharmanagar District Hospital as his condition worsened.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Kritish Rajbanshi stated that due to darkness and panic, he was unable to identify any of the attackers.
Police from Churaibari Police Station reached the scene the same night and began an investigation. On Friday morning, hundreds of locals gathered at the site, expressing anger and concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the area. In the presence of police and local dignitaries, an attempt was made to access CCTV footage from the house, but this could not be done immediately due to password issues.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about public safety, as residents claim that thefts and robberies have become frequent whenever houses are left vacant. Locals have demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and stronger security measures to curb the rising crime in the area.
