Agartala, 2nd January 2026:   A series of thefts in the early hours of Friday has triggered widespread concern in Sepahijala district, with incidents reported alarmingly close to key administrative offices—the Superintendent of Police (SP) and District Magistrate (DM).

Local sources reported that a gang of thieves broke into the home of carpenter Dipak Goswami by forcing open the door, and Goswami alleged that the miscreants stole a mobile phone before fleeing when family members raised an alarm. Around the same time, near the boundary wall of the SP and DM offices, thieves targeted the auto rickshaw of driver Pipasa Sutradhar, from which cash and valuables were reportedly stolen. In another shocking incident later that night, miscreants broke into the residence of Abhijit Debnath, booth president of Golaghati constituency’s 45th polling station and a prominent businessman in Bishramganj market, and allegedly stole his Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle bearing registration number TR01K-4750 after breaking through the grill of his house.

The thefts occurred just a few yards from the district’s top administrative offices, situated along the national highway. The proximity of these crimes to such sensitive locations has heightened public anxiety.

Residents expressed anger and fear over the repeated incidents, questioning the adequacy of security measures in the district. “If thefts can occur right next to the SP and DM offices, how safe are ordinary citizens?” asked one local resident.

The matter was reported to Bishramganj Police Station this morning. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incidents. Meanwhile, the spate of thefts has left the community unsettled, with calls for stronger security arrangements around administrative hubs and residential areas.
