Agartala, 24th September 2026 : A series of alleged snatching incidents and anti-social activities has triggered panic among residents and commuters in and around Uttam Bhakta Choumuhani under the Bishalgarh subdivision and Kamalasagar Assembly constituency.
According to local sources, an alleged gang of armed miscreants has been active across the road network connecting Darogabari, Uttam Bhakta Choumuhani, Gokulnagar Hospital Choumuhani and the Gokulnagar road junction. The miscreants allegedly remain at secluded locations and target pedestrians, motorcyclists and other vehicles, particularly during vulnerable hours.
Locals allege that victims have been intercepted and threatened with firearms before being robbed of cash, jewellery and other valuables. There are also allegations that members of the gang have been involved in targeting vehicles used for smuggling activities.
Residents have reportedly accused a local man identified as Tapas and his associates of being behind the alleged activities. However, these allegations have not been independently verified.
The alleged presence of firearms has further heightened concern among residents, who fear that the situation could escalate unless immediate action is taken.
Questions have also been raised over the role of police personnel posted at the Uttam Bhakta Choumuhani checkpoint. Residents and alleged victims have expressed dissatisfaction over what they describe as inadequate police intervention despite repeated incidents in the area.
Locals have urged the police and administration to intensify patrolling and conduct combing operations across the affected roads. They have also demanded that those involved in the alleged criminal activities be identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with law, along with the recovery of any illegal firearms.
