Agartala, 25th January 2026: Kailashahar has been rocked by allegations of law and order collapse, with opposition leaders accusing the administration of turning a blind eye to rampant violence and illegal activities under the ruling party’s patronage.
At a press conference held yesterday afternoon at the District Congress office, MLA Birajit Sinha, District Congress President Badruzzaman, and senior leaders Rudrendu Bhattacharjee and Runu Mia raised explosive charges against the authorities. The central issue: the steady deterioration of law and order in Unakoti district.
MLA Birajit Sinha claimed that in recent weeks, direct support from the ruling party has emboldened criminals. He cited the violent clashes and arson in Shimultala under the Fatikroy assembly constituency, over extortion disputes as a glaring example.
The most serious allegation came when Sinha revealed that a government room adjacent to the Unakoti Guest House, under the Health Department, had been illegally occupied by the BJP Youth Morcha president. He further alleged that Kailashahar Municipal Chairperson Chapala Debroy had unlawfully authorized its use. According to Sinha, the room had long been a hub for antisocial activities.
Local residents had lodged written complaints with the Superintendent of Police nearly six weeks ago, copies of which were also submitted to the MLA. Despite direct discussions with both the SP and later the District Magistrate, no action was taken, raising questions about administrative inaction.
The situation escalated during Saraswati Puja, when two ruling party factions clashed violently in Kailashahar. The unrest forced businesses to shut down and prevented students from attending festivities, spreading panic among residents.
Yesterday evening, authorities finally sealed the disputed government room. Before sealing, police recovered a large cache of sharp weapons. Sinha alleged that additional weapons were smuggled out from the back of the building the previous night, even under police watch. He also claimed that contraceptives were found inside the room.
Despite the recovery of arms, no prime accused has yet been arrested, drawing sharp criticism from Congress leaders. Sinha pointed out that although weapons were seized from the house of Imran Ali—accused in the Saraswati Puja attack on a local mandal president—police failed to arrest him.
The MLA further warned that another government room at the IDSMT complex in North Kachergat has been occupied illegally, where gambling and substance abuse sessions are being held at night. He alleged that this too was authorized by the municipal chairperson, cautioning that failure to act could trigger another major clash.
Following the press conference, Youth Congress leaders submitted a three-point deputation to the Superintendent of Police at Kailashahar police station. District Congress President Badruzzaman later told reporters that the Saraswati Puja violence was linked to contractor disputes, but vested interests were attempting to give it a communal color. He demanded strict action against those responsible.
Badruzzaman also insisted that all individuals connected to the illegal Youth Morcha office and the seized weapons must be arrested immediately. He urged authorities to publicly display the arms recovered during recent raids and take exemplary action against the culprits.
