Agartala, 18th January 2025: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Assam Police seized a consignment of the narcotic cough syrup Phensedyl at the Churaibari watch post near the Assam-Tripura border on Saturday morning. Acting on routine checks, authorities intercepted a lorry bearing registration number WB65C-2852 carrying retail goods from West Bengal to Agartala.
During the inspection, officers recovered 2,200 bottles of Phensedyl concealed in a sesame bag within the vehicle. The seized consignment packed in cardboard boxes is estimated to have a black market value of Rs 11 lakh, according to officials.
The lorry driver identified as Rabiul Sheikh, a resident of Murshidabad district in West Bengal was immediately taken into custody. During initial questioning, Sheikh admitted to transporting the goods from Kolkata to Agartala.
A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to uncover the supply chain and destination of the contraband. The arrested driver was produced before the Sribhumi District Court on the same day.
“This seizure highlights ongoing attempts to smuggle drugs into Bangladesh through Agartala,” a police official remarked, emphasizing the need for stricter vigilance to curb cross-border drug trafficking.
