Assembly Erupts Over DGP Suicide Note; Congress MLA Expelled, CPI(M) Walks Out

Date:

Agartala, 31st August 2026:  The Tripura Legislative Assembly witnessed a major confrontation on Monday after Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman raised the issue of the alleged suicide note of deceased DGP Anurag Dhankar, prompting the Speaker to order his expulsion from the House. CPI(M) legislators subsequently staged a walkout in protest.

The controversy unfolded after the conclusion of the Question Hour, when Roy Barman sought to raise the issue of the alleged suicide note once again. Referring to the DGP’s wife, who had recently arrived in Agartala, the Congress MLA claimed that she had a photograph of the note and questioned why it had not been made public.

“Where is the suicide note? The wife of the DGP has the photograph of the suicide note. Why was the suicide note removed? Why was his uniform not checked properly? Who forced the DGP to commit suicide? We want this suicide note to be brought before the public,” Roy Barman said.

Speaker Rampada Jamatia intervened and asked Roy Barman not to continue with the issue, pointing out that the matter was already under investigation. The Speaker also reminded the Congress MLA that the proceedings of the House had to be conducted in accordance with its rules.

“The matter is under investigation. You are not following the rules. The Chief Minister has already given two statements. Don’t confuse the House and the public. You are not following Article 361 of the rules,” the Speaker said.

The situation escalated after the Speaker announced that the House would proceed with its next business. Congress legislators led by Roy Barman, along with CPI(M) MLAs, entered the well of the House and began protesting.

Despite repeated appeals from the Speaker to return to their seats, the Opposition legislators continued their protest. The Speaker then ordered the expulsion of Roy Barman from the House under Article 330.

As Roy Barman did not immediately leave the Assembly, the Speaker directed police personnel to take steps to remove him from the House.

Roy Barman later walked out along with the CPI(M) legislators. The Opposition strongly criticised the Speaker’s decision and accused the ruling side of preventing them from raising questions surrounding the circumstances of the DGP’s death.

The incident brought the Assembly proceedings into a tense phase as the Opposition continued to press for greater transparency regarding the alleged suicide note.
