Agartala: June 25. A significant number of athletes today gathered in front of the residence of Tripura State Olympic Association state secretary Rupak Debroy demanding his removal from the crucial post. Expressing their grievances to the media, a former Kabaddi player stated, “Rupak Debroy has engaged in rampant corruption within the sports organization. Despite the funds allocated by the Olympic Association, he maintains strict control over them, never utilizing a single penny for the welfare of the players. We have confronted him on numerous occasions and lodged complaints with the authorities, but the state government has failed to take any action.”

The protesting athletes accused Debroy of exerting direct influence over 28 sports bodies affiliated with the Olympics. They claimed that regardless of the discipline, such as hockey, Kabaddi, or other athletic sports, Tripura’s players are consistently overlooked. Allegations of widespread irregularities were made, including evidence of Debroy facilitating players from other states to represent Tripura in national competitions, thereby denying opportunities to local talents. The athletes demanded his immediate resignation, emphasizing that it was crucial for the future of sports in the region.

The protests continued for several hours, but Debroy remained unresponsive within his residence, declining to comment on the allegations leveled against him.

Subsequently, the protestors proceeded to the East Agartala police station to officially lodge their complaint. However, the police have yet to register a First Information Report (FIR).
