Agartala, 5th October 2025 : Residents of Madhupur under the Kamalasagar assembly constituency have raised serious concerns over alleged political favoritism and misuse of power by local police officials. The controversy erupted following an incident involving Dipak Debnath, a local auto driver from Adarsha Colony, who was reportedly harassed by police despite possessing valid documents for his vehicle.
On Sunday morning around 10 AM, Debnath was operating his auto-rickshaw (registration number TR074428) along his usual route through Madhupur, Kamalasagar, and Rashtarmatha. Upon reaching Anand Chowmuhani, he was stopped by Madhupur police conducting routine vehicle checks. Although Debnath presented all necessary papers, officers claimed the documents were not visible online and allegedly forced him to sign a charge sheet. He and his passengers were held for nearly 45 minutes, raising questions about the conduct of the police.
The situation took a dramatic turn when two local youths arrived at the checkpoint on a motorcycle without helmets or valid documents. Initially stopped by police, one of the youths reportedly made a phone call to the local Mandal President. Eyewitnesses claim that upon hearing the name, officers saluted and released the duo without further questioning.
This incident has sparked outrage among local residents and auto drivers, who allege that political connections are being used to bypass legal procedures. Many complain that ordinary citizens are fined heavily for minor infractions, while those close to political figures enjoy immunity.
Locals are now demanding a transparent investigation into the matter, calling for accountability and equal treatment under the law. The episode has intensified public scrutiny of law enforcement practices in the region and raised broader concerns about the influence of political patronage on policing.
