Agartala, 24th February 2026:  . An opposition legislator has lodged a formal complaint alleging that a group of individuals obstructed the installation of streetlights in his constituency under the MLA Area Development Fund.

Nayan Sarkar, CPI(M) MLA from Bamutia Assembly constituency, stated that two streetlights had been sanctioned in Navagram panchayat under the MLA Area Development Fund. According to his complaint, workers engaged by the contractor began installation on February 20 in a densely populated locality near the Chintaharan Debnath Anganwadi Centre. While one streetlight was successfully installed with local support, work on the second was allegedly halted by a group of residents.

Sarkar named four individuals Bikash Das, Utpal Das, Karan Bhattacharjee, and Tapas Chowdhury of Uttar Ramnagar accusing them of forcibly stopping the work. He further alleged that the group pressured the contractor to dismantle the newly installed streetlight and threatened to block all future development projects under the MLA fund in the area.

Highlighting that the locality remains poorly lit at night, Sarkar emphasized the importance of streetlights for public safety and convenience. He has sought registration of an FIR under sections relating to obstruction of government work, damage to public property, and criminal intimidation, urging police to initiate appropriate legal action.
