Agartala, 26th March 2024 : The Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala solemnly observed Genocide Day on Monday, March 25th, in remembrance of the martyrs who fell victim to one of the most brutal massacres in the history of Bangladesh, dating back to the night of March 25th, 1971.
Marking the occasion, various arrangements were made at the premises of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission. The ceremony commenced at 09:00 AM, with wreaths being laid and tributes paid to the portrait of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on behalf of the Assistant High Commission.
At 09:10 PM, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the victims, followed by the lighting of candles to honor their sacrifice. A special prayer was offered at 09:15 PM, seeking forgiveness for the souls of the martyrs and prosperity for Bangladesh. The messages from the Honorable President and Prime Minister of Bangladesh, dedicated to Genocide Day, were read out at 09:20 PM, followed by a video presentation recounting the harrowing events of March 25th, 1971, at 09:25 PM.
A brief but poignant discussion ensued, delving into the significance of the day. Eminent figures, including Assistant High Commissioner Arif Mohammad, addressed the gathering, paying homage to the architects of freedom, including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the four national leaders, and the brave freedom fighters.
Reflecting on the tragic events of March 25th, 1971, speakers emphasized the unparalleled sacrifice of three million lives during the nine-month-long struggle for independence. They denounced the cowardly attack by Pakistani forces, known as ‘Operation Searchlight,’ as one of the darkest chapters in human history.
Furthermore, the speakers called upon nations worldwide, including India, to recognize March 25th, 1971, as “International Genocide Day,” acknowledging the magnitude of the atrocities committed.
Following the commemorative event, invited guests were hosted, concluding the program conducted by the first secretary of the mission, Md. Rezaul Haque Chowdhury.
