Agartala, 26th March 2024 : A serious road accident took place in the vicinity of Baikhora Police Station, resulting in severe injuries to a local resident. The incident involved a collision between a cargo truck bearing registration number TR01R-1503 and a scooter bearing registration number TR08F-7471. The scooter driver was thrown onto the national highway and sustained serious injuries.
Despite the presence of TSR jawan, an officer on-duty at the nearby Naka checking point, no immediate assistance was provided to the victim. This lack of action has sparked outrage among the local community.
Upon hearing of the incident, Prabhuji Karuneshwar Madhav Das from the neighboring ISKCON-run Jagannath Jew Temple rushed to the scene. He arranged for the injured individual to be transported to South Tripura District Hospital at Santirbazar. However, during this act of goodwill, Prabhuji was allegedly assaulted by TSR Jawan Amal Datta, who was also on duty at the time.
This incident has led to a public outcry, with locals blocking the national highway in protest against the inaction of the police. The Officer in Charge (OC) of Baikhora Police Station, Bishnu Chandra Das, has come under scrutiny for his alleged negligence. Residents claim that Das frequently neglects his duties, often leaving for his residence in Agartala. His absence during the roadblock and protest further fueled the residents’ anger.
Moreover, allegations have surfaced regarding the OC’s handling of complaints and cases. It is claimed that Das often advises individuals to settle cases out of court, and does not file cases even when complaints are lodged. The Baikhora Police Station is also accused of charging monthly fees to 15 liquor shops, 10 bullock carts, 7 sand carts, and three tasers at the Baikhora old liquor counter. Allegedly, the OC extorts large sums of money monthly from Nibhas Saha and other drug mafias for the sale of narcotic drugs in the sacks of sugar.
The local community is incensed by these allegations and the OC’s perceived negligence. During the protest, their anger was palpable. However, Prabhuji Karuneshwar Madhav Das managed to pacify the crowd and unblock the road. He then rushed to South Tripura District Hospital to inquire about the condition of the injured individual.
The victim, identified as Purna Charan from East Pilak area, Tripura, is reported to be in critical condition. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to GB Hospital for further treatment.
