Agartala, 1st June 2025: A Bangladeshi smuggler was shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) on Saturday night along the India-Bangladesh international border in Tripura’s North district, triggering temporary tension in the area.
The incident occurred around 9 PM in the Devipur border area under Rangauti Gram Panchayat. The deceased has been identified as Pradeep Dev, 35, a resident of Nishchinpur village in Bangladesh’s Comilla district.
According to BSF sources, personnel from the force were on routine patrol when they noticed suspicious movement near the border fencing. Upon challenging the group and asking them to surrender, the suspects allegedly attempted to attack the BSF personnel, prompting the troops to open fire in self-defense.
Pradeep Deb sustained gunshot injuries and was later rescued and rushed to Unakoti District Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Following the incident, others in the group reportedly fled back across the border. The situation created a brief stir in the border area, though the BSF later confirmed that the situation was under control.
“The local administration and BSF have launched a joint investigation into the incident,” a BSF official said. “Security has also been tightened in the area to curb smuggling activities along the border.”
