Agartala, 1st June 2025:  Continuous heavy rainfall over several days has led to severe flooding across multiple areas of Dharmanagar subdivision disrupting public life and forcing many families to seek shelter in relief camps. Rising river water levels and widespread waterlogging have compounded the crisis, leaving agricultural fields submerged and farmers deeply worried about their livelihoods.

Authorities have urged residents to relocate to safer locations as relief and rescue efforts intensify. Government agencies, along with private organizations, are actively supporting the flood-affected communities. Officials fear it may take time before conditions stabilize.

One of the worst-hit areas, Laxminagar Ward No. 4 in Bagbasa assembly constituency saw emergency rescue efforts after reports emerged of four families trapped by floodwaters. Initially, personnel from the Premtala Fire Brigade responded, but due to a lack of boats, they were unable to proceed. Later, Dharmanagar Fire Department teams arrived with boats, and a joint operation successfully rescued 26 stranded individuals, including members of Mastakin Ali, Sultan Ali, Manar Ali, and Monir Ali’s families, transporting them to a relief camp at Kherengjuri SB School.

During rescue operations, locals voiced their frustration over the worsening flood situation. According to residents and officials, the natural drainage system in the area has been compromised by illegal construction. A stream originating from the Assam-Tripura border, known as Ichaichhara, historically carried excess water through Churaibari Forest Reserve and neighboring villages. However, a stone crusher established by Jiyam Uddin (Raj) near the Assam-Agartala National Highway allegedly blocked the water flow, creating a disastrous situation for local communities.

Angered by the inaction, residents staged a protest by blocking the national highway. Churaibari police soon intervened, pressuring the owner to dismantle the obstructing dam. Under police supervision, a dozer was used to remove the structure, allowing floodwaters to gradually recede. Locals expressed frustration, stating that earlier intervention could have prevented such devastation.

The floods have left homes in ruins, destroyed crops and severely impacted poultry farms.
