Agartala, 30th April 2026: Police have arrested Biswajit Debbarma, accused of abducting and assaulting an eight-year-old girl in Madhupur. He is currently in custody at Madhupur Police Station.
It is reported that, the incident took place on April 26 last in South Madhupur Panchayat. The accused allegedly lured the child from her home and took her to a nearby forest, where he forcibly assaulted her. When the victim cried out, neighbors rushed to the spot, but before fleeing, Debbarma reportedly inflicted burns on her body with a lit cigarette.
Later, he attempted to carry the child to a sluice gate in Madhupur, allegedly intending to kill her by throwing her into the river. Local residents intervened in time, rescuing the girl and rushing her to Madhupur Hospital. A case was subsequently registered against him.
The delay in arrest sparked protests. Yesterday, members of the Left youth organizations from Komolashagar and Madhupur submitted a deputation to the OC of Madhupur Police Station, demanding immediate action. They warned of a larger agitation if the accused was not apprehended within 24 hours.
Responding to the pressure, police intensified their search and arrested Debbarma late Wednesday night. The OC confirmed that a case of rape has been filed and the accused will be produced before the subdivision court today.
Local residents have demanded strict punishment, emphasizing that such crimes must be met with exemplary action to ensure justice for the victim.
