Agartala, 29th December 2024: In a shocking turn of events, a group of 7-8 individuals reportedly affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a violent attack late last night on the residences of CPIM Sadar Sub-district Committee member Sanjeev Saha and City Local Committee member Subir Dey.
The attack took place in Kansari Patti, a locality in the heart of Agartala city, around 11:30 PM.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants hurled bricks and mortars at the doors, windows, and rooms of the houses, causing significant damage. Women in the households were subjected to vile verbal abuse, and even Subir Dey’s ailing, bedridden mother was not spared from the onslaught of insults.
The attackers also issued threats to the CPIM, declaring that the party would face dire consequences. They insulted the party’s leadership, including Manik Sarkar, accusing him of being an agent of the government. Despite the victims’ attempts to seek police intervention, the authorities reportedly failed to act. Witnesses allege that the attacks continued unabated even in the presence of the police, who refrained from arresting the miscreants.
This morning, upon receiving news of the attack, CPIM District Committee Secretary Ratan Das, along with Sadar Sub-district leaders Manojit Ghosh and Sanjay Das, visited the victims’ residences to assess the damage and offer support to the affected families. They condemned the incident and reassured the families of the party’s solidarity.
In a strongly-worded statement, the CPIM West Tripura District Secretariat denounced the attack, terming it as a blatant manifestation of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The Secretariat noted with alarm that the incident occurred merely 150-200 meters from the residence of the state’s Honorable Chief Minister, further highlighting the lack of security and governance.
As a mark of protest, the CPIM organized a demonstration in front of the East Agartala Police Station today at noon. A deputation was submitted to the police, demanding immediate action against the attackers. The party’s leaders have called for the arrest and strict punishment of the culprits, urging the authorities to restore the rule of law in the state.
