BJP, CM Condemn Attack on Tagore’s Ancestral Home in Bangladesh, Demand Swift Action

Agartala, 12th June 2025:  The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura, including Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha and Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb, has strongly condemned the recent attack on the ancestral home of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Shahjadpur, Bangladesh.

Chief Minister Dr. Saha termed the incident “highly condemnable and a matter of national shame.” He said miscreants had vandalized the poet’s ancestral residence, located in Sirajganj district, and demanded swift and exemplary punishment for the culprits.

“Rabindranath Tagore is not just a literary icon but a global figure who penned the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh. An attack on his ancestral home is an attack on our shared cultural heritage. The caretaker government of Bangladesh must act immediately and take strict action against those responsible,” Dr. Saha said in a statement.

Echoing the Chief Minister’s sentiments, former Tripura Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb described the attack on the “Kacharibari” — now converted into the Rabindra Museum — as a dark chapter in Bangladesh’s cultural history.

“Rabi Thakur transcends boundaries of caste, religion, and language. The assault on such a revered site, tied to the creator of our national anthem, is shocking and disgraceful. Such incidents reflect the growing intolerance and anti-minority sentiment in Bangladesh and bring shame to the nation on the global stage,” said Deb.

Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath also denounced the incident and expressed grave concern over the rise in cultural violence across the region. Meanwhile, Tripura Pradesh BJP had planned to hold a protest rally against the incident. However, the event was postponed following the recent Air India flight crash.

BJP state general secretary Amit Rakshit said, “The vandalism at Tagore’s ancestral house was premeditated. While we had scheduled a protest rally, we decided to defer it in respect of those affected by the tragic Air India accident.”Rakshit also criticized the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus, alleging that it is engaging in several “anti-India” activities.

“They are making provocative statements against India, and the attack on Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore’s home is part of a larger conspiracy,” he claimed.
