Sanitation workers hold protests with begging bowls over unpaid wages at Melaghar

Agartala, 12th June 2025:   Sanitation workers of Melaghar Municipal Council staged a dramatic protest by sitting in front of the municipal office with begging bowls to demand payment of their pending wages this afternoon.

It is reported that the sanitation workers have not received their salaries for the past five months. Many of them, who rely solely on these wages to support their families, are now facing severe financial hardship. Despite repeated appeals to municipal authorities, no action has been taken to dispense their dues.

The workers affirm, they have spoken officials on numerous occasions, but were met only with hollow assurances. Frustrated by the prolonged delay and lack of adequate response, they resorted to the symbolic protest, demanding immediate release of their wages.

Reportedly, many locals have expressed support for the protest, holding the municipal council liable for its alleged negligence. They cited the irony that, while the municipal body continues to collect taxes from Melaghar residents, it has failed to pay the very workers responsible for maintaining cleanliness across the town.

Protesters assured that they will continue their agitation until their demands are fulfilled.
