Agartala, 28th June 2024:  In a decisive move to address the escalating political crisis in West Bengal, BJP national president JP Nadda constituted a four-member committee chaired by Tripura’s former Chief Minister and current Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb. The committee was tasked with investigating the state’s situation under the current leadership. On Friday, the committee presented its findings to Nadda revealing alarming concerns about the state of democracy in West Bengal.

The BJP’s Fact-Finding Committee led by Deb included MPs Ravishankar Prasad, Brijlal and Kavita Patidar. Their report painted a grim picture of the democratic processes in West Bengal, accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of severe electoral misconduct.

The report states, “In West Bengal, under the present leadership of Mamata Banerjee, all democratic norms of free and fair elections have been seriously compromised because of the blatant misuse of official machinery.” The committee highlighted how the police force has been allegedly transformed into an “ancillary force of the TMC,” with instances of “open intimidation, threat, violence, and attack by the goons of TMC on BJP supporters and those opposed to the ruling party.”

A particularly disturbing aspect of the report is the treatment of women, especially those belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. “What is indeed very shocking is that women, including those of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, are being subjected to torture, vicious attacks, and even rape in front of the public without any action being taken,” the report asserted. The committee criticized Mamata Banerjee, stating, “This too is happening under a woman Chief Minister for whom the dignity of women is not important; getting victory in the election is.”

The committee’s findings extended to various levels of elections, noting, “Be it the Vidhan Sabha election, Gram Panchayat election, or the Lok Sabha election, this abuse and misuse of power with a collaborating police and administration giving a helping hand to goons and goondas of TMC has been perfected into a fine game plan.”

Furthermore, the report pointed out the issue of illegal immigration, claiming, “A large part of Bengal today has been flooded by illegal immigrants and also by Rohingyas who are getting a safe haven under a collusive strategy from the TMC.”

This report by the BJP’s committee is expected to stir significant political discourse and demands for action in West Bengal as the party aims to highlight and address the challenges faced by the state’s democratic framework.
