Agartala, February 02: A BJP leader and his associates have been booked for allegedly assaulting and threatening a shop owner and his son in Paschim Paikhola village of South Tripura district. The incident took place on July 8, 2021, when Dulal Rudra Pal, a member of Dakshin Tripura Zilla Parishad, along with his brothers Sushil and Dilip, and five or six other men, allegedly attacked a small shop run by Niwas Rudra Pal and his son with sticks and rods. They tried to forcibly evict the shop owner and his family from the premises, claiming that the land belonged to them.
According to the complaint filed by Niwas Rudra Pal at Belonia police station on Friday, the attackers also warned them that if they did not vacate the shop within three days, they would demolish it with a bulldozer and expel them from the area. Niwas Rudra Pal alleged that Dulal Rudra Pal had been using his political clout to grab government shops and forest land in Paschim Paikhola village. He also accused him of trying to install a water tank in his residential plot for his personal benefit, and threatening him again when he objected.
The local panchayat had tried to intervene and resolve the dispute amicably, but Dulal Rudra Pal refused to cooperate. Niwas Rudra Pal demanded the protection of his shop and family, and the arrest and punishment of the culprits. The police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, and are investigating the matter. No arrests have been made so far.
