Agartala, 29th April 2024 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) North District President, Kajal Das, was arrested following accusations of physical and mental assault on a presiding officer during election duties, granted bail today.
The incident, which occurred on April 26 during the East Tripura Lok Sabha election, saw Narayan Chakraborty, the presiding officer at Booth No. 22 of Bagbasa Assembly constituency, allegedly subjected to harassment in full view of voters.
The State Election Department swiftly responded by lodging a formal complaint at the Kadamtala police station, prompting an investigation into the matter. Jayanta Debnath, Officer-in-Charge of the Kadamtala police station, confirmed the filing of the complaint and subsequent actions.
Upon investigation and review of reports by senior election officials, including the Sector Officer and Micro Observatory personnel, a case was registered against Kajal Das and others under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 131 (Abetting mutiny, or attempting to seduce a soldier, sailor or airman from his duty), and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), along with relevant provisions of the Representation of the People (RP) Act.
In light of the serious allegations, Kajal Das was arrested by the authorities. However, he was later released on bail after proceedings at the Dhamarnagar court.
