Agartala, 27th June 2026: After eight years, elections to the Bishalgarh Bar Association were held today in a festive atmosphere under tight police security. Voting began at 11:00 a.m. and concluded at 1:30 p.m., with 51 out of 53 registered lawyers casting their ballots.
The contest was between two panels: Bar Unnayan Mancha (closely associated with the ruling BJP) and the Independent “Matha” Panel. Five posts were up for election.
For the Secretary’s post, BJP panel candidate Suman Bhowmik secured 34 votes, defeating Zakir Hossain of the Matha panel, who received 17 votes.
In the Treasurer’s race, Rajesh Debbarma of the Matha panel won with 28 votes, while BJP’s Tapan Roy got 22 votes.
For the Members’ posts, BJP candidates swept the field: Rajib Prasad Das won with 41 votes, Amzad Hossain with 36 votes, and Rajib Roy with 30 votes.
Vote counting began at 2:30 p.m., and once results were declared, jubilant BJP panel supporters celebrated with firecrackers. The election was conducted peacefully without incident.
Returning Officer Sajal Singh informed the media that six posts had already been filled uncontested, while elections were held today for the remaining five positions.
