Agartala, 6th September 2026 : The BJP and Tipra Motha Party are set to begin negotiations over seat-sharing for the September 28 Village Committee elections in Tripura, with senior leaders from both sides scheduled to meet on Sunday evening.
The talks come shortly after Tipra Motha leaders held discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi over issues related to the implementation of the Tripartite Agreement and the demands of the state’s indigenous population.
Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, who returned to Agartala from Delhi, said the meeting with Shah was positive and that several issues raised by the party were discussed.
According to Debbarma, the Centre is likely to send a delegation to Tripura shortly to hold consultations with Tipra Motha chief and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, along with other representatives of indigenous society.
He said land rights remain one of the key issues being pursued by the party and expressed hope that the implementation of the Tripartite Agreement would begin soon.
“We are hopeful that the implementation process will start within this month. Land rights are particularly important, and amendments will have to be made wherever necessary. The agreement will be implemented gradually,” Debbarma said.
Meanwhile, the proposed BJP-Tipra Motha seat-sharing arrangement is expected to take shape during Sunday evening’s meeting. Debbarma said the two parties would assess their respective organisational influence before finalising the distribution of seats.
The Tipra Motha delegation will include Debbarma, Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma, TTAADC Chief Executive Member Runiel Debbarma and former MDC Purna Chandra Debbarma. Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath and other BJP leaders are expected to represent the ruling party.
Debbarma said the alliance partners would follow a constituency-specific approach, with each party likely to contest seats where it has a stronger support base.
“If the BJP has a stronger presence in an area where we do not, they can contest there. Similarly, where Tipra Motha has greater influence, we will seek those seats. The distribution will be decided accordingly,” he said.
On the nomination papers already filed by Tipra Motha candidates, Debbarma said the party still has the option of withdrawing nominations after the seat-sharing exercise is completed.
He also indicated that the party was keen to avoid any disagreement among prospective candidates and supporters while the alliance negotiations were underway.
“We do not want to hurt anyone’s sentiments. We are hopeful that the discussions will be positive and that our demands will also be addressed soon,” he said.
