Botorshi Bazar shuts down in protest over murder of two brothers

Date:

Agartala, 23rd October 2026 : Protests against the brutal murder of two brothers in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar intensified on Friday, as traders at Paschim Botorshi Bazar shut their shops for several hours, demanding capital punishment for the accused.

The victims, Shubhadip Roy Chowdhury, 27, and his younger brother, Joydip Roy Chowdhury, 24, were allegedly murdered near the Dharmanagar-Baruakandi highway on the night of October 19, triggering widespread grief and anger across the subdivision.

Although Dharmanagar police arrested the prime suspect, Bijon Das, within 48 hours of the incident, public outrage over the double murder has continued.

Responding to a call by the Paschim Botorshi Bazar Committee, local traders voluntarily kept their shops closed from the morning until noon on Friday to register their protest and demand the strictest possible punishment for the accused.

Jamil Hossain, a member of the market committee, said the killing of the two brothers was completely unacceptable. He said traders had joined the shutdown to demand justice and capital punishment for the person responsible for the crime.

Meanwhile, residents from different sections of society have called for a speedy and impartial investigation, followed by a fair trial to ensure that the guilty receive the harshest punishment under the law.

The incident has left the region deeply shaken, with people now demanding swift legal proceedings and justice for the two brothers.
