Agartala, 6th July 2025: A complex marital dispute has come to light in Boxanagar where a man returning from abroad is seeking legal redress and community support after his wife allegedly abandoned their child and later accused him of secret remarriage.
According to local sources, Sheikh Sadi of Dakshinpara, Boxanagar married Chakina Khatun of Gatighar, Kamalnagar four years back following social traditions. The couple had a daughter within a year of marriage. On Chakina’s suggestion, Sadi moved to a Gulf country for employment separating from his family.
While abroad, Sadi’s mother raised concerns about his wife’s behavior citing frequent calls from unfamiliar numbers. Allegedly, months before Sadi’s return, Chakina left their daughter at his residence and absconded with another man. Subsequent inquiries by both families revealed conflicting claims about her whereabouts.
A written complaint was filed with the Tripura Commission for Women after failed attempts by local leaders from Boxanagar and Kamalnagar to mediate the issue. However, despite several summons, Chakina’s family reportedly did not appear before the Commission. Rumors later emerged that she had eloped with a man from a tribal community.
Upon returning home, Sadi reportedly made efforts to locate his wife but found no trace of her. Following a prolonged period of uncertainty, he remarried with the knowledge of local authorities. Days later, Chakina and her parents approached the police, accusing Sadi of remarrying secretly without her consent.
Village elders claim they made repeated efforts to resolve the matter amicably, but Chakina’s family remained unresponsive. More recently, Sadi alleges he has received calls from Chakina threatening police action unless he pays a sum of Rs 3 to Rs 4 lakh.
Now caught in legal and emotional turmoil, Sadi is appealing once again to village Pradhans and the police for justice, also seeking custody of his daughter, who reportedly remains with Chakina’s family.
Local leaders have expressed concern over the growing complexity of the case and the toll it has taken on the individuals involved.
