Agartala, 21st November 2024: A courageous soldier from the Birganj Panchayat area of Amarpur sub-division Subhankar Bhowmik was martyred in an avalanche while on duty in the Siachen Glacier area of Jammu and Kashmir. The news of his demise reached his family on Tuesday morning when his younger brother received a phone call about the tragedy.
Subhankar Bhowmik, the middle son of Sukumar Bhowmik was serving in the Indian Army. His eldest brother is in the CRPF, while the youngest resides at home. Subhankar was performing his duties in the treacherous terrains of Siachen when the avalanche struck, seriously injuring him. Despite the valiant efforts of his colleagues to rescue him, Subhankar succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.
On Wednesday evening, Subhankar’s coffin draped in the tricolor arrived at M.B.B. Airport, where Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Indian Army officials paid their last respects. “He was a true son of the soil, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten,” said Chief Minister Saha.
The body was then taken to an Army camp and later transported to Subhankar’s home in an army vehicle on Thursday morning. Thousands of people from the Amarpur subdivision participated in a bike rally from Thakchhara, accompanying the martyr’s body home. The emotional scene saw Subhankar’s family, including his wife, daughter, parents, and other relatives, break down in tears. Minister Pranajit Singh Roy, area MLA Ranjit Das, and the District Magistrate of Gomti district were present to honor the braveheart.
Minister Roy laid the national flag on Subhankar’s body as a mark of respect. “Shaheed Subhankar’s sacrifice for the country will be remembered forever. The government stands with his family in this time of grief,” he stated, announcing a financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The body was then taken to Subhankar’s old house for cremation, where TSR, BSF, Assam Rifles, and Tripura Police personnel paid their respects with floral tributes. The last rites were performed with full state honors, as thousands of mourners bid a tearful farewell to their local hero, Subhankar Bhowmik.
