Agartala, 28th May 2026: A shocking incident of domestic violence has triggered widespread panic in Deowanpasha area under Dharmanagar police station of North Tripura district on Wednesday night. A 45-year-old housewife was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon by her husband following prolonged family disputes. She is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition at Dharmanagar District Hospital.
The injured woman has been identified as Shilpi Sen Barman (45), while the accused husband, Joydeb Barman (50), is a resident of Kanchanpur. According to sources, the couple had been living in a rented house in Ward No. 3 of Deowanpasha since December last year.
The incident reportedly took place around 8:30 PM on Wednesday at their rented residence. Local residents and the house owner claimed that the couple had been involved in frequent arguments and domestic disputes since moving into the area. Efforts had reportedly been made by locals and members of a community organization to resolve the ongoing conflict.
According to reports, Shilpi Sen Barman had recently lodged a complaint at the women’s police station in Dharmanagar after some important divorce-related documents allegedly went missing. She accused her husband of hiding the documents. Tension between the couple reportedly escalated further after police contacted the accused regarding the complaint.
The horrifying incident came to light when the landlord’s son heard screams coming from the house and rushed to the spot. Upon opening the door, he allegedly found Shilpi lying in a pool of blood on the floor. Witnesses claimed that Joydeb Barman fled the scene carrying a sharp dao (machete-like weapon).
Local residents immediately informed authorities as well as former MLA Molina Debnath and local panchayat representatives. Fire service personnel from Dharmanagar quickly arrived at the scene and shifted the critically injured woman to Dharmanagar District Hospital.
Doctors treating the victim stated that she sustained a deep wound on the back of her neck caused by the sharp weapon. She remains under close medical supervision.
Former MLA Molina Debnath and other local representatives later visited the hospital to inquire about the victim’s condition and assured support to the family.
Meanwhile, Tripura Police launched a search operation and eventually arrested the accused, Joydeb Barman. He is currently in police custody, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
