Agartala, October 29, 2023: A series of burglaries struck the neighbourhood of Shaltila area in Belonia, with seven houses falling victim to theft on the night of October 26 last. Among those targeted was the residence of Ashok Mitra, a Left MLA representing the Hrishyamukh Assembly Constituency.

The burglars made off with various valuables, including a water motor from the MLA’s residence in the Shaltila area. Despite a theft case being formally filed at the Belonia Police Station on October 27 at noon, it has come to light that, even after three days, the local police had not initiated an investigation at Babura MLA’s house.

Frustration and concerns about law enforcement’s role in the recent spate of thefts led two Left MLAs, Dipankar Sen and Ashok Mitra, to submit a memorandum to the Belonia police station at approximately 2 pm on Sunday.

In their appeal, they called for enhanced security measures to safeguard the community, increased nighttime patrolling, and the utilization of surveillance footage to identify the culprits and a white car suspected to be linked to the thefts.

Following the deputation, Police Officer Ashish Das committed to addressing the matter, promising a more proactive response to the wave of burglaries that have rattled Belonia and its suburbs.
