Agartala, 23rd March 2026: The 56-Dharmanagar assembly constituency is witnessing a surge in political activity as candidates from major parties officially filed their nomination papers on Monday, kicking off an intense by-election battle. Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress demonstrated their organizational strength through vibrant processions across Dharmanagar city.
BJP’s Jahar Chakraborty submitted his nomination in a grand procession from the party office in Padmapur. The rally drew a massive crowd of party workers and supporters and was described as notably larger than those of other parties. Senior party leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya, were present to bolster support. Chakraborty, who previously contested the seat in 2013 but lost, has been re-nominated, signaling BJP’s determination to reclaim the constituency.
Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharya also made a strong impression with a colorful rally that began at the Dharmanagar District Congress Bhavan. The procession, lined with flags and banners, moved through major city streets before reaching the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office, where he filed his papers with Returning Officer Debjani Chowdhury. Bhattacharya expressed optimism, stating that the people of Dharmanagar would back Congress to promote regional development and safeguard citizens’ rights.
