CAA grants Indian citizenship to two Bangladeshis in Tripura; MLA Ranjit raises questions over transparency

Date:

Agartala, 14th June 2026:   The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) has granted Indian citizenship to two Bangladeshi nationals in Tripura, while another 20–24 Bangladeshis have reportedly applied for Indian citizenship through the online process, said Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma.

Raising questions over the procedure and transparency surrounding the citizenship process, Debbarma said there is nothing wrong with anyone becoming an Indian citizen, but sought clarification on several issues related to those who have applied under the CAA.

“The Citizenship (Amendment) Act has granted Indian citizenship to two Bangladeshis in Tripura. These two persons are from the North District. Around 20–24 more Bangladeshis have also applied online for Indian citizenship. There is nothing wrong with becoming an Indian citizen, but several questions need clear answers,” Debbarma stated.

The Tipra Motha MLA questioned whether the applicants, after being officially identified as Bangladeshi nationals, were kept in detention camps before receiving citizenship. He sought details on the duration of their stay and the legal process followed during that period.

Debbarma also asked for clarification on when the individuals who received Indian citizenship entered Tripura and how long they had been residing in the state. He said there should be transparency regarding their background and settlement history.

He further questioned why the reasons behind their leaving Bangladesh and seeking Indian citizenship have not been made public.

“The people have the right to know why they left Bangladesh and under what circumstances they were granted citizenship. Why has this information not been clearly presented before the public?” he asked.

Debbarma also raised concerns regarding citizenship eligibility within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), stating that a clear explanation should be provided on whether those receiving Indian citizenship under the CAA are eligible for rights and benefits within the council area.

He urged Director of Census Ratan Biswas to clarify these issues publicly, saying that a transparent explanation would help remove confusion among people.

“I hope my questions and suggestions will be helpful if the Director of Census, Ratan Biswas, clarifies the matter before the public,” Debbarma added.
