Agartala, 24th August 2026 : Alleged irregularities in recruitment to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) came under renewed attack on Monday as three CPI(M)-affiliated tribal organisations organised a mass sit-in in Agartala, demanding cancellation of appointments allegedly made without following prescribed recruitment norms.
The protest, organised by the Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP), Tribal Youth Federation (TYF) and Tribal Students Union (TSU), was held near the Swami Vivekananda statue at Astabal Maidan. The organisations submitted a seven-point memorandum, highlighting alleged recruitment violations and seeking passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill.
Addressing the protesters, CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury alleged that more than 250 people had been appointed to different posts in the ADC over the past five years without following a proper selection procedure. He claimed that advertisements were not issued and interviews were not conducted in these cases.
According to Choudhury, the ADC had acknowledged the appointments in an affidavit submitted in connection with a Public Interest Litigation before the High Court. He called for a detailed investigation to determine the circumstances under which the appointments were made and fix responsibility for any violations.
The CPI(M) leader said those found responsible for wrongdoing should face legal action. He also maintained that appointments made without giving eligible candidates an opportunity to compete should not be allowed to stand if they are found to have breached recruitment rules.
The protesting organisations demanded that all existing vacancies in the ADC be filled through fresh recruitment, with advertisements issued publicly and selection conducted on the basis of merit and transparency. They stressed that all qualified candidates should receive an equal opportunity to compete for posts.
Choudhury alleged that arbitrary recruitment had deprived unemployed and qualified youths of a fair chance to secure government employment. He also criticised repeated assurances of action against alleged corruption, claiming that similar commitments had failed to produce adequate results over the past five years.
The protesters further demanded passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill, arguing that stronger constitutional safeguards were necessary to enhance the powers and effectiveness of autonomous district councils in the Northeast.
The agitation has placed ADC recruitment once again at the centre of political debate, with the protesters seeking accountability for past appointments and a transparent mechanism for future recruitment.
