Agartala, 27th May 2025: Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Tuesday announced that the Central government is likely to take steps toward reviving the defunct Kailashahar Airport in Unakoti district. The statement came a day after officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) visited the site to assess its feasibility for reoperation.“
The state government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed to enhancing Tripura’s communication infrastructure,” said Minister Chowdhury. “Since the BJP came to power, there have been notable improvements in roadways, highways, and airways.”Highlighting his ongoing efforts, the minister said, “I have consistently advocated for the revival of the Kailashahar airport. I have written to both former and current Union Civil Aviation Ministers and have personally met them on multiple occasions to push this demand. I’ve urged the Centre to start flight operations from this airport.”
Chowdhury added that Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha is also actively involved in the matter and has taken it up with the Central government.“This issue has been raised several times in the State Assembly, often by the opposition. I had assured that before the visit of Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu to Tripura, an AAI inspection would take place. That inspection was carried out yesterday. I am optimistic that the Central government will take timely and appropriate action,” he said.
