Agartala, 9th September 2025: For the development of the Chakma language, a series of initiatives have been taken, including the inclusion of the Chakma language in the Google Translation platform, holding a national seminar, and observing Chakma Script and Language Day on August 7.
This was informed by Power and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath today after he chaired an important meeting of the advisory committee formed to develop the Chakma language.
The Minister, who is the patron of the advisory committee, informed that the committee has decided that different sub-committees are needed for the development of the language.
“Today, seven sub-committees were formed. In today’s meeting, the committee also decided on the inclusion of the Chakma Script in the Google Translation platform. Around 50,000 words have already been collected, and more will be gathered. Another decision taken was to hold a National Seminar,” said the Minister.The Minister informed that as per the 2011 Census in Tripura, there were 79,000 people belonging to the Chakma community, and as per non-government data, the number now stands at 1.25 lakh.
He further stated that there are a total of eight communities, and to develop their languages like Chakma, Manipuri, Kokborok, etc., the Directorate of Kokborok and Other Minority Languages was formed.
He informed that in around 123 schools, students from Class 1 to 8 are being taught the Chakma language. The Minister also said that just as Tripura celebrates Kokborok Day on January 19, it has been decided to observe Chakma Script and Language Day on August 7.
During the meeting, Chairman Sambhu Lal Chakma and others were present.
