Agartala, 31st December 2025: The Chakma Students’ Association has accused the Village Council Chairman of Narkel Kunja of making racially offensive remarks against members of the Chakma community, sparking outrage and calls for accountability.
Speaking to media personnel at Agartala Press Club today, student leaders alleged that Sukumar Debbarma, who heads the Narkel Kunja Village Council and is linked to the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), used derogatory language while referring to Chakma traders.
Association Pramukh Jiban Chakma claimed that Debbarma described local traders as “Bangladeshi,” a remark the students denounced as racially insensitive. They further alleged that he made objectionable comments about physical features, reportedly saying that “people with less prominent noses should learn Kokborok.”
The incident, which allegedly occurred on November 29, has triggered deep resentment within the Chakma community. The association has demanded an unconditional public apology from Debbarma.
Student leaders stressed that safeguarding one’s mother tongue is a constitutional right, noting that Tripura is home to 19 indigenous tribes, each with distinct languages. They pointed out that not all tribal groups, including Mog and Mizo communities, use Kokborok as their primary language.
The association also urged TMP chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma to take disciplinary action against Sukumar Debbarma, warning that such remarks threaten social harmony and mutual respect among communities.
