Agartala, 10th September 2026 : The condition of the National Highway at Champaknagar has deteriorated significantly, with mud and accumulated rainwater making the road slippery and difficult to navigate. The worsening condition has caused severe hardship for commuters and vehicle drivers, particularly those operating heavy vehicles.
The four-laning work of the Assam-Agartala National Highway has been underway for a long time, but repeated interruptions in construction have delayed the project. On Thursday afternoon, rainwater accumulated along the Champaknagar stretch, triggering a major traffic jam and leaving hundreds of goods-laden trucks and passenger vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.
According to commuters, the stretch has remained virtually impassable since Wednesday evening. Even light rain on Wednesday made the road difficult to use, while Thursday’s rainfall further aggravated the situation. At present, the journey from Champaknagar to Agartala is reportedly taking around two to two-and-a-half hours.
While smaller vehicles are managing to pass through local lanes, drivers of large vehicles are facing serious difficulties and are often forced to remain stranded on the highway for hours. Despite the large number of vehicles stuck in the area, commuters alleged that no administrative personnel were visible to manage the traffic situation.
Drivers and local commuters have urged the government and administration to intervene immediately and expedite the highway construction work. They also expressed dissatisfaction with the contracting agency, alleging that repair and renovation work is periodically initiated but frequently abandoned midway, leaving the project stalled and the public to suffer.
Commuters warned that the situation could worsen further with continued rainfall unless immediate measures are taken to improve the road and regulate traffic in the affected stretch.
