Agartala, 10th June 2026: A 2021 case related to the municipal elections has once again come into the spotlight after a chargesheet was filed in a Khowai court. The case, registered as Khowai Police Station Case No. 77/2021, has reached a new stage following the completion of the police investigation and submission of the chargesheet before the court.
Among those named in the chargesheet are several senior leaders of the Trinamool Congress, including TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen, former West Bengal minister Bratya Basu, and MLA Kunal Ghosh.
The chargesheet also names former Tripura Trinamool Congress leaders Subal Bhowmik and Prakash Das. Notably, both leaders are currently associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
According to police sources, the case was registered during the 2021 municipal election campaign period over allegations that a political meeting was organized in the Khowai area without obtaining the necessary administrative permission. The accused have been charged under Sections 186 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
With the filing of the chargesheet after a prolonged investigation, the case has now entered a new phase of judicial proceedings. Court sources indicated that the recording of witness testimonies may begin soon. If required, summons could also be issued to the accused persons for their appearance before the court.
Political observers believe that the case is one of the significant legal episodes stemming from the intense political rivalry and tensions that marked the 2021 Tripura municipal elections. The fact that two of the accused, who were then Trinamool Congress leaders, are now members of the BJP has added a fresh political dimension to the matter.
