Agartala, 30th June 2026: A shocking case of alleged child trafficking has surfaced from Kanchanmala Muslimpara area under Amtali Police Station, where a couple is accused of handing over their infant daughter to a person from Assam due to extreme financial hardship.
According to reports, daily wage worker Sazahan Mia, also known as Saju Mia, and his wife had been facing severe economic difficulties. The couple, who have three daughters, allegedly gave away their youngest daughter to a resident of Bazarichhara in Karimganj district of Assam in exchange for money.
After the matter came to light, local residents informed the district administration, child protection authorities, and Amtali Police Station. Acting on the information, police initiated efforts to rescue the child.
The child was recovered on Tuesday morning and brought to Amtali Police Station. Later, a team from the West Tripura District Child Protection Unit completed the necessary legal formalities and took the child into government custody.
While speaking to reporters, the child’s mother did not directly admit to selling the child but acknowledged that financial difficulties had compelled the family to hand over the child to a person from Assam.
District Child Protection officials stated that a detailed investigation has been launched. The child is currently under government protection, and the Child Welfare Committee will decide the next course of action. Police continue to investigate the matter, and legal action may follow depending on the findings.
