Agartala, 8th November 2025: Students from Sharatchowdhury Para of Rongmala village in Charilam are risking their lives each day by crossing a fragile bamboo bridge to reach school. The makeshift structure, built by villagers after the collapse of the original bridge during August’s floods, has become increasingly unstable, raising serious safety concerns.

The original bridge, which served as the village’s sole connection to nearby areas, was washed away in the flood. Although reconstruction efforts were initiated by local authorities, work was abruptly halted, and contractors have since abandoned the site without completing the project.

With no alternative route available, residents took matters into their own hands, erecting a temporary bamboo bridge. However, the structure is deteriorating rapidly, and children must navigate its precarious planks daily to attend school.

Villagers allege repeated appeals to local officials and elected representatives have gone unanswered. “We’ve approached the administration several times, but there’s been no response. Our children’s education is at risk, and their safety is constantly in danger,” said one resident.

The community is now demanding immediate action from the authorities to construct a permanent, safe bridge. “We need a proper bridge so our children can go to school without fear,” urged another villager.
