Agartala, 7th September 2025 : Severe negligence in the ongoing Smart City drainage project triggered chaos in Agartala after workers allegedly dug beyond the designated area near Laxminarayan Bari late last night. The excavation damaged gas pipelines, water lines, and electricity cables, crippling essential services across the city and adjoining localities.
Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL) said it was not informed beforehand, and the damage led to supply breakdowns in areas including Circuit House, Guwalabasti, Shalbagan, Airport Road, and Abhoynagar. The disruption of both gas and power services left residents struggling with water shortages, business losses, and household hardships.
Local sources alleged that workers often extract copper from damaged cables to sell in the market, with little to no supervision from senior officials of the contractor company. Residents accused both the administration and the contractors of repeated negligence.
Meanwhile, ongoing drainage work has worsened traffic congestion, forcing commuters, students, and office-goers into long jams. Complaints have also emerged about unscheduled power cuts in the name of pre-festival preparations.
Caught between Smart City promises and collapsing services, angry citizens have demanded strict supervision, accountability, and better coordination to prevent recurring crises.
