Agartala, 12th September 2026 : The solution to Tripura’s agricultural problems should be found in the state’s soil through research, and it must be remembered that agriculture is not just a profession—it is the foundation of civilization.
This was informed by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath today while addressing the 20th Foundation Day and Graduation Day 2026 of College of Agriculture, Tripura.
He said that everyone must remember that agriculture is not just a profession—it is the foundation of civilization.
“We often say—Information Technology is the future, Artificial Intelligence is the future, Industry is the future, Space Technology is the future. But today I want to say from this stage that Agriculture is also the future. Agriculture is the future of food. Agriculture is the future of the rural economy. And agriculture is one of the foundations of the future of our environment and human civilization. That is, every person born into this world has the right to food. Therefore, studying agriculture does not mean just earning a degree. Studying agriculture means taking responsibility for the food security of people,” he said.
The Minister said that today, compared to 2014, the education, research, training and academic exposure of the College of Agriculture, Tripura, have expanded a lot.
“Today’s picture is completely different. Our aim should be—Atmanirbhar Krishak. Atmanirbhar Gram. Atmanirbhar Tripura. To increase the income of the farmer, it is not enough to increase production alone. He has to be linked to the market. For our government, agriculture is not just an economic activity. Agriculture is the backbone of the rural economy, the basis of food security and an important sector linked to the livelihood of millions of people. Our aim is not only to increase agricultural production. Our aim is to increase the income of the farmer, reduce the cost of production, ensure the right price of agricultural produce and connect the farmer to the national and international market,” said the Minister.
He said that we also need to develop an agricultural system where productivity is balanced with soil health, biodiversity, water conservation and environmental sustainability.
The Minister said that if agriculture is weak, the rural economy will be weak. Food security will be weak. Farmers’ income will be affected. Employment will be affected. Pressure on the environment will increase.
“We must remember that it is our responsibility to protect agricultural soil, water and biodiversity for future generations. One of the biggest challenges of agriculture in the future will be climate change. We have to create an agriculture that can fight climate change. We have educated young agricultural professionals like you. You can be the new face of Tripura’s agricultural transformation,” he added.
