Tipra Motha wins 1,548 seats unopposed; Tripura Village Committee Polls set for September 28

Date:

Agartala, 12th September 2026 :  The Tipra Motha Party has strengthened its position in Tripura’s tribal areas after securing 1,548 village committee seats uncontested in the latest phase of the state’s electoral process.

The results followed the completion of the nomination withdrawal process for elections to 587 village committees under the state’s Sixth Schedule areas. According to Tripura State Election Commission Secretary Anurag Sen, 1,630 of the total 4,597 seats have already been settled without polling. Of these, Tipra Motha secured 1,548 seats, while its ally, the BJP, won 82 seats unopposed.

Polling will now take place for the remaining 2,967 seats on September 28. A total of 9,820 candidates remain in the contest, representing Tipra Motha, BJP, CPI(M), Congress and other political organisations.

Tipra Motha has emerged as the largest participant, fielding 4,279 candidates. The CPI(M) has nominated 2,151 candidates, followed by the BJP with 1,853 nominees.

The scale of Tipra Motha’s uncontested victories assumes significance following the party’s strong showing in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections in April. Political observers believe the latest developments could further expand the party’s influence among tribal voters and strengthen its negotiating position with the BJP ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.

The village committee elections are particularly important as tribal areas account for nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical territory and remain central to the state’s political calculations.

Tipra Motha’s emergence since 2023, backed by its demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’, has significantly altered the traditional political equations in the state’s tribal belt, once dominated by the Left Front and later influenced by the IPFT-BJP alliance.
