Agartala, August 16, 2023: The Congress Party has taken a strategic stance by extending its support to the opposition in the 20-Boxanagar and 23-Dhanpur assembly constituencies, aiming to fortify the collective anti-BJP effort. This move, designed to bolster the anti-BJP struggle, also signifies the party’s decision to abstain from contesting the upcoming elections. This strategic move has been executed in collaboration with the central leadership, emphasizing the party’s commitment to strengthening the broader Indian alliance in the days ahead.

Pradesh Congress President Asish Kumar Saha, made this announcement during a press conference on Wednesday. The decision reflects the party’s dedication to a united opposition front against the BJP.

The decision comes amidst the backdrop of unsettling events. On the eve of Independence Day, Congress workers had diligently prepared for a celebration at the Bagma Block Congress office, only to have it marred by a reprehensible act. Members of the ruling party reportedly vandalized the office, breaking locks, ransacking contents, and even setting fire to the premises, including the national flag. The State Congress condemned this incident in the strongest terms, denouncing it as an utterly heinous act.

Pradesh Congress President Saha voiced concerns over the police’s response to this alarming incident, particularly given the close proximity of the office to the Bagma police outpost. While a case was promptly registered, the police’s actions have raised questions about their commitment to the matter.

Saha also expressed distress over a separate incident involving the vandalization of vehicles belonging to Congress leader Radheshyam Saha in Kamarpukurpar here. A formal complaint has been lodged with the East Agartala police station, and a letter has been dispatched to the Director General of State Police, seeking appropriate action.

During the press conference, Saha further criticized the ruling BJP party for curbing freedom of speech and democratic values, asserting that the upcoming by-election raises concerns about the integrity of the democratic process. The demand for Director General of Police intervention underscores the gravity of the situation at hand.
