Agartala, 18th July 2024:  A delegation from the All India Congress expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in Tripura, particularly in the Gandacherra subdivision, during a meeting with Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Thursday afternoon. The delegation, acting on the directives of All India Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, arrived in the state to address the pressing issues surrounding the three-tier Panchayat elections.

The delegation was comprised of notable figures including Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, North Eastern Region in-charge Girish Chodankar, senior Congress leader Tariq Anwar, and All India Congress editor Szarita Laitphlang. They were joined by state Congress president Asish Kumar Saha and MLA Sudip Roy Barman in their mission to highlight the dire situation to the Governor.

Addressing the media post their meeting, Gaurav Gogoi emphasized, “The Congress is deeply worried about the situation in Gandacherra. There are attempts to destabilize Tripura akin to the fraternal riots we witnessed in Manipur. Despite the police presence, they remain silent as incidents unfold.” He added that the Gandachhara subdivision has faced significant turmoil in recent days, necessitating immediate intervention to assist those affected.

Girish Chodankar further elaborated, “We have requested the Governor to ensure all necessary compensations are calculated and distributed. The law and order situation in Tripura has deteriorated to the extent that the opposition cannot contest the elections fairly. The ruling party is infringing upon the democratic rights of the opposition.”

Highlighting the pre-election environment, Chodankar stated, “The Congress had alerted the police administration as soon as the elections were announced. Despite measures to maintain peace, the police’s inefficacy has allowed terrorism to persist. We demand that Tripura adheres to the democratic model advocated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The current state of terror around the Panchayat elections is unacceptable.”

The delegation reassured the media that Governor Nallu had listened attentively to their concerns and promised to investigate the matter thoroughly. They also announced plans to visit various areas, including Agartala city, on Friday to assess the ground situation and take further necessary actions.
